Costa Rica – 2009
Twenty children come down the dirt road leading to the Carbon School each day. There, they are greeted by the school’s teacher and principal, Maritza Gaitan, and begin the lessons for the day.

The village of Carbon is a few miles inland from the coast and has a population of about three hundred people. To reach the village from Puerto Viejo, a stream has to be forded in your vehicle, as there is no usable bridge to cross the water.

The school was built in 1983 along with a small kitchen building and a toilet building. The refrigerator in the kitchen hasn’t worked in years and the toilets need total renovation. The electrical wiring hangs in taped repair disarray throughout the school.

Current needs:

  • A new refrigerator.
  • Renovation or newly built restrooms that will meet Costa Rica’s current standard. The school needs this to remain open after the 2010 school year.
  • Safe electrical wiring throughout the school.
  • Paint for the existing buildings.
  • Scholarships for the children to go on to high school in Bribri. It costs approximately $200.00 a year to attend high school in Costa Rica and few of these twenty children can afford to continue their education.

The goal for Women Like Us is to meet these current needs before visiting the school again in November, 2010. After these first issues are taken care of, we can work toward textbooks, a library facility and other long term projects that will benefit the village.

You can help by contributing directly to the Costa Rica project, supporting the high school scholarship program or attending the next Women Like Us tea.
