One Girl at a Time – Enrichment Scholarship Program

One of the goals for Women Like Us Foundation, as well as an option for WLU Chapters, is to raise funds for enrichment scholarships for local under-served girls. The scholarship would include a one year mentoring program and a short-term international humanitarian trip.

Women Like Us acknowledges the need for better prepared and educated youth within our own communities. Through this program, these high school girls can become our partners and serve as future committed and engaged women in making a substantial difference in all of our futures. These participants will also realize that they can be good will ambassadors for the United States, while becoming culturally literate of the world in which they live.

WLU Enrichment Scholarship Recipients will receive a one-year mentoring program that would include:

  • Life-coaching session(s) encompassing a holistic approach that establishes a sense of self-worth and empowerment
  • A short-term international humanitarian trip
  • Shadowing a selected career mentor targeted at their specific interest (half day or more)
  • Attendance at two Women Like Us Afternoon Tea and Speaker Series
  • Additional activities at the discretion of the provider and the interest of the recipient (for example: yoga, cooking, child-care, public speaking, CPR, etc.)

Responsibility of Women Like Us:

  • Provide life coaching and career mentoring sessions
  • Raise 100% of the cost for air fare, land arrangements and food on the international humanitarian trip for high school girl(s)
  • Provide a qualified chaperon that meets the requirements of the corporate headquarters or individual WLU Chapter
  • Implement a list of responsibilities for the scholarship recipient so expectations can be outlined in advance
  • Set up a pre-trip briefing to review the itinerary, mission activities, cultural and packing tips, etc.

Responsibility of Scholarship Recipient:

  • Participate in pre-trip meeting, packing party, and learn activities that will be implemented on mission trip
  • Submit a three page paper two weeks prior to departure on the culture and needs of the destination
  • Attend Women Like Us Tea and Speaker Series, if applicable
  • Participate in all activities while on the humanitarian trip in a conduct serving of the scholarship
  • Submit a summary of the trip experiences including highlights and recommendations
  • Do a presentation upon return to the WLU Chapter or corporate office and/or in their school or classroom
  • Give a minimum of four volunteer hours to the organization prior to the trip departure
  • Deliver an extra suitcase of humanitarian supplies to the international destination
  • Pay for any passport or incidental costs on international humanitarian trip

The WLU Enrichment Scholarships can be awarded to select girls in several ways:

  • Present one enrichment scholarship to a rural high school for them to choose not only the student, but get the entire school involved in humanitarian needs at a selected destination. The school could collect in-kind donations, funding for the project the scholarship winner will be involved in, and learn more about the needs in a developing country.
  • An already developed program that recognizes under-privileged girl(s) of academic excellence and/or other recognized achievements
  • High school age girls submitting an application directly to WLU Chapters or Foundation
  • Corporate sponsors or private donors selecting candidates of under-served and at-risk/high achiever girls
